b Dental Spa offers services to patients of all ages who live in Bergen County, Passaic County, Bogota, Norwood, and Totowa, New Jersey, but we have a specific focus on pediatric patients. Our goal is to help build and maintain a life of healthy oral hygiene.
Although all dentists receive some training in the care of children's teeth, a pediatric dentist has additional training specifically in the problems that affect children. After graduating from dental school, a pediatric dentist goes on for an additional two years of training in the care of infants, children, adolescents and people with special care needs. Pediatric dentists are also trained in comprehensive care that includes the effect of conditions like asthma or diabetes on oral health.
Pediatric dentists offer oral care that begins soon after birth, with basic education for parents on oral hygiene for the baby. Like general dentists, they provide routine services such as cleaning and fill cavities. They often have special equipment designed specifically for children, and may perform procedures like sedation dentistry for children who are too frightened or unable to be cooperative with procedures.
In many cases, a general or family dentist is well able to care for children's teeth. One of the differences between children and adults, however, is the developmental conditions. For example, baby teeth must be replaced by permanent teeth, the jawbone must develop normally and some children face problems from congenital anomalies. If a child has any developmental issues, a consult with a pediatric dentist may be a good idea.
Oral hygiene should begin soon after birth, with gentle cleaning of the baby's gums. As the child gets older and teeth appear, parents should brush them for the child. Eventually, the child will be able to brush and floss, but parents should still supervise to ensure the cleaning is adequate. Regular dental visits are also important, even before the child needs cleaning and treatment, to help the child become familiar with the dentist and build rapport.
