Root Canal Q & A

What is a Root Canal?

Your tooth isn't really solid but instead has a soft core of tissue called pulp inside the root. If the pulp becomes diseased or infected, it can be very painful, and there is always a potential that the infection may spread. A root canal is actually a surgical procedure to clean out the pulp so the infection can heal. Root canals can be performed in a dentist's office and usually need only a local anesthetic.

How Do I Know if I Need a Root Canal?

Some people have no symptoms, even when they need a root canal. Most people, however, report pain, or severe sensitivity to heat or cold. You may actually have drainage or pus from the tooth, and swelling or tenderness in the tissues adjacent to the infected area. If the infection is severe, the glands in your neck could become swollen and you might have a fever. Your dentist can determine if a root canal is necessary based on your symptoms and an examination.

What's A Root Canal Like?

The first step before performing a root canal is to X-ray the tooth. After giving you a local anesthetic, the dentist will place a small protective sheet called a dental dam to keep saliva out of the area during the procedure. Next, the dentist makes a small opening in the top of the tooth, and using very small instruments, cleans out the infected pulp. The opening is filled and a temporary filling is used to close the hole. You'll need to return for a second visit for a crown, which is the permanent part of the repair.

What Aftercare is Necessary for A Root Canal?

There is a risk the tooth could break. Until you get the permanent cap, be careful not to chew or bite on the treated tooth. Although you may have some minor pain, over-the-counter medications should be adequate to take care of any problems. Oral hygiene is important; keep flossing and brush twice a day. After your final visit for the root canal, resume your usual preventive dental care schedule.
