A dental emergency typically results when there is a broken or lost tooth, a high potential for losing a tooth or severe pain. An injury that involves a fall or direct blow to the mouth can dislodge or break a tooth. In some cases, the tooth is knocked out completely. Dental emergencies should be dealt with as soon as possible in order to save the tooth. The other issue is preventing infection from lacerations or injury to the gums. Dental emergencies should be treated immediately, even after hours or on a weekend.
When a permanent tooth is knocked out, immediate action is required. Keeping the tooth moist at all times is very important, as that may help the dentist reattach it. If you can, put the tooth back in the socket (don't touch the root). You could also hold it between cheek and gum, or place it in milk. The American Dental Association has also approved a tooth preservation product; simply open the container and place the unwashed tooth into the preservative solution.
A tooth that has been chipped or cracked should be promptly attended to prevent further damage, a complete break or possible decay or infection. Severe toothaches should be investigated; if the source of pain is an abscess, it will need prompt treatment. You may be able to manage an injury from biting your tongue, but if you have anything more than minor bleeding (or if the bleeding won't stop) you should be seen. While you're waiting, rinse your mouth with warm water to clean the area and use cold compresses to help keep down pain and swelling.
Treatment really depends on the type of emergency. For example, if you have an abscess, you may need antibiotics after the abscess is drained. A broken tooth may need a temporary cap or crown. Our dentists will assess the situation and make a determination based on that assessment.
